For a long time now Ville Lenkkeri has been interested in the relationship the real is having to various forms of its representation and specifically to that of photography. While photography is inherently linked to the real, it never gets closer to the reproduction of its subject than capturing some of the twisted shadows the real is casting. Truth has its domain in the reality while representations are always subjective and partial, often false and sometimes fictional or narrative. Rather than testifying something haven existed or happened photography proofs the presence of the photographer and thus photography becomes a mirror of a personal experience and subjective manipulation.

In this exhibition there are pictures gathered from several of Lenkkeri’s projects over the last ten or so years dealing with the subjectively altered processes of representation.  Sometimes reality turns into ridicule, sometimes it takes a form invisible to the senses, sometimes the truth is playfully enhanced by the means of fiction and deliberate misunderstanding.

For Lenkkeri the relation between world and its image is not only problematic but also liberating, challenging and fascinating.

Ville Lenkkeri (born in Oulu, Finland in 1972) has studied film theory and practice at the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague 1994-96. During the years 1998-2001 he fulfilled the Bachelor Degree in Photography at FAMU and returned then to Finland to complete the Masters of Arts degree in Photography in 2002-06 at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki (UIAH). In 2005 Lenkkeri moved to live and work in Stockholm, Sweden. During and after the MA studies Lenkkeri has taken part in a number of national and international art and photography shows and has also held a number of one-man exhibitions. It is in Lenkkeri’s interest to survey by the means of photography and text the phenomena of representation in its myriad of forms. Cinema remains a strong influence in Lenkkeri’s work. His photographs are often to be seen as scenes from the borderlands of the real and staged.   Ville Lenkkeri has published two monographs, Reality in the Making, 2006, and The Place of no Roads, 2009, with Hatje Cantz.
